When you are looking for your “Dream Job”, your resume may be in need of a complete rewrite. These tips will help you impress any recruiter or hiring manager.
Career Management Document
One tip you should follow is to create a Career Management Document. This document will comprise a list of all your jobs and all of your accomplishment bullets under each job. You will use this as a source from which to build the resume you will use for each specific job. Yes, you still need to tailor your resume for each job you apply for. Having the Career Management Document will make it easy to pull various elements from your past jobs together.
Keep it Simple
It’s a necessity to keep your resume to one page. The creation of the Career Management Document is one way to help you do that. Unless you’re heading into an upper management role, one page is still the length limit. Recruiters who have to sift through hundreds of resumes for any number of positions, don’t have time to read more than one page.
Here are some of the main sections that your resume should contain and how to create them.
Yes, it is still important for you to have a skills section on your resume. You should place this at the top of the resume, under your name and contact information. You may be tempted to put all of your mad skillz in this section, but please refrain. List the skills that are most relevant to the job that you’re applying to. You want a recruiter to see right away that you have the skills that the job you applied for requires.
This next section will address the components of your Job paragraph and how to update them.
The job paragraph is the section that encompasses everything associated with a particular job. The first thing that should be in your job paragraph is the Job Title. Next will be the company name and dates you were employed. You should follow this up with the job description and then end with your accomplishment bullets. The job paragraphs will be listed in reverse chronological order, newest to oldest. Now, let’s go through each section starting with Job Title, Company Name and Dates employed.
You will begin your job paragraph with the title of your position that is the most descriptive. Some companies will have the marketed job title, but then have an internal job title as well. Since both are accurate, use whichever one will help you look more qualified for any job you may be targeting. Next, you will list the name of the company you worked for. You will follow this up with the dates for that particular role. You must use the month and the year when listing the date.
Create a concise one or two sentence description for each position you have held. This description should let the recruiter know the primary type of work you are responsible for doing. You may have a generic title like Financial Analyst. Unfortunately, this job title does not highlight your specific job responsibilities and will have the recruiter making assumptions. When you leave the recruiter room to assume, they are going to assume the worst.
The purpose of your resume’s bullets is not to list out your responsibilities. That is why we created the job description area to get that clarified first. You will use the bullets under the job description to talk about what you accomplished in that role and how you did it. It is important that you communicate that clearly and effectively to the recruiter. They have a lot of candidates who have done what you do, so you have to tell them how well you did it.
The bullet starts off with a measurable metric that you accomplished. For example, “Reduced annual expenses by $2M…”. It is strong by starting with the end result. Next, you tell them HOW you accomplished this goal. “Reduced annual expenses by $2M through vendor contract renegotiations”. You are telling the recruiter that your negotiation skills are so good it was worth $2M to the company. That is a very effective statement and will grab the attention of any recruiter.
